HO CHI MINH CITY, VIETNAM (HOE-chee-men) – The Lunar New Year or Tet holiday is the most important time of the year for the people of Vietnam. The first day of Tet is on January 31 this year, but the traditions and celebrations will start much earlier in the month and the official holiday will continue until February 5. Families will come together during this time, and the successful observance of the holiday is seen as an indicator of the success of the coming year. Traditions center around acquiring luck, sacrificing to gods who are believed to have authority over the household, visiting temples, and sacrificing to ancestors. Please pray for the people of Ho Chi Minh City during this time, when they are focused on such spiritual pursuits. Pray that God’s Spirit will speak to them, causing dissatisfaction with empty practices and drawing them to Himself. Pray for those who have recently been exposed to the Gospel through the Christmas season to see clearly the truth of God’s offer of salvation through Christ alone. Pray especially for believers, who face the strongest opposition and persecution from their families during Tet. Ask God to strengthen their faith and give them opportunities to make a positive witness to their families.
