This market is the focal point of the Cholon area of Ho Chi Minh City, the center of the ethnic Chinese population in the city. There’s a large section in the market where they sell many items for ancestor and Buddhist worship. The day that we went we spoke to a shopkeeper selling incense and paper money and houses for ancestor worship and some others in the market. We were able to tell them about Jesus and leave a tract with them but their initial response was that all religions are good. Another man we shared with and gave a Gospel tract to told us that he had never heard of Jesus before our conversation.
In the middle courtyard of this market is a statue of the founder of the market where people regularly come to pray to his spirit asking for money and business success. A number of other small idols are scattered through the area.
We prayed that the people in the market and especially those coming to worship at the shrine would learn that fulfillment in life can only come from God, not from money and possessions. We prayed that those coming to buy incense or any item used to worship spirits would turn from worshipping other gods to worshipping the true God and find salvation through Jesus Christ. We prayed that those we gave tracts to would continue to read them and consider the claims of Christ.
