This is a temple dedicated to the goddess Bà Chúa Xứ and also has other idols and ancestor worship. Bà Chúa Xứ is one of several popular goddesses worshipped by the Vietnamese and she originates from the Sam Mountain in An Giang province near the Cambodian border. Various legends surround this goddess, popularly believed to have spontaneously emerged from the stone of the Sam Mountain some time in the 1800’s. She is considered the “Lady of the Realm” and seen as a provider of business and health and a protector of the Vietnamese border. She is also considered to be vindictive to those who offend her or lie to her.
When we visited this temple there were several people there including many children using the area for play. We spoke with one man who said that he along with others come there to worship the goddess to receive luck and blessings from her. He said that he and his family have worshipped the goddess for several generations. Another lady we spoke with at the temple told us that her husband and two sons were Christians. We prayed for the man to break the tradition of his family for generations to find the truth in Jesus Christ. We prayed for the Christians from the lady’s family to boldly and lovingly share their witness more with her and others that come to the temple. We prayed that God might be glorified in this place and that people would come to Christ in the neighborhood and that a new church would be started there.
