As the Vietnamese people worship their ancestors they burn incense to them and pray to them. They also offer fruit or other foods and even cigarettes to the spirits of the dead as a sacrifice. If they put real food on the worship altar they may eventually remove the food and eat it themselves. But another practice they have is to burn “property” as a way to pass these things to their ancestors in the spirit realm. They may burn paper money (fake), paper clothes, paper cars and paper houses. In their belief when these things are burned they are somehow transferred and become real in the spirit world. Most we talked to said that they believed their ancestors would be distressed, hungry or somehow hurt if they did not receive these offerings.
We talked to a man and his daughter that own and run a shop along this street selling all types of paper things for people to burn in their ancestor worship. The man told us that the business was good and he wouldn’t want to do anything different. As we talked we were able to share Jesus with the man. In the end we offered to give him a Gospel tract but the man said he was afraid to receive it. So we left him sad.
God please help this man and his daughter to know Jesus. Please help him not to rest because he continues to remember what we told him. Help him to make an effort to find out more, to find a Christian or a church where he can hear more about you. Help him to see that even if his business is successful it is not work living his life with You. God please glorify Yourself by helping this man and his daughter to truly know You and help him to go from the one selling items for the worship of false spirits to one who is an evangelist telling many people about the salvation found in Jesus Christ!
