The English language Vietnamese news website VietNamNet Bridge has had a couple of good articles highlighting concerns related to education in Vietnam. The first asks the question, “Exam Season or Suicide Season?” reporting on the rise of depression and suicide attempts that is synchronous with the announcement of the university entrance exam results. The second asking, “Vietnamese students good or bad?” which outlines the apparent disparity between glowing reports of the numbers of students passing the high school graduation exam and that of the large number of students failing to pass the university entrance exam.
There are many challenges that are faced by Vietnam in the realm of education. Inadequate school facilities, teacher shortages and insufficient teacher training. The government and many others are trying to take steps to solve those problems but it is going to take time. Of greater concern is the unhealthy emphasis placed upon success (particularly material success) that fuels the depression and suicides brought on by exam results. Pray with us for the students of Vietnam that they will find their true and complete fulfillment in Jesus Christ. Pray that through Christ families will grow in their love for one another and provide an environment for growth and success
