Đá Cầu is considered the national sport of Viet Nam. The formal game is played with a net, lower but similar to volleyball. Individuals or teams kick or use their body (but not hands) to pass a shuttlecock back and forth over the net.
In the World Shuttlecock Championship in Hong Kong this week, Duo Anh Tuấn and Ngọc Hải defeated a Chinese pair 2-0 in the men’s doubles final to defend their title and take a second gold for the Vietnamese team in the tournament. The Vietnamese team has won in all previous eight tournaments.
Beyond the formal game, seeing young people playing Đá Cầu is a common site throughout the country, often just two friends, or a circle of friends passing the shuttlecock between themselves with no net on a sidewalk or other open space.
