We visited this brightly colored temple in the morning and had a good introduction to understand this local Vietnamese religion of Cao Dai. A young man, D, showed us around the temple and in part explained that Cao Dai was a “mystery religion” and seemed to feel it important that some things about the religion couldn’t be explained. Cao Dai combines elements of several different religions including a structure and terminology that is borrowed from Catholicism and a pantheon of gods and prophets that include Buddha, Jesus, Confucius and Victor Hugo.
More than anything we saw that there were people in this religion desperately wanting to find God but not sure where to look, fearful of doing something wrong.
We prayed that God would show our guide, D, and the people that come to the temple that Jesus Christ is the Way, the Truth and the Life and that no one comes to the Father except through Him. We prayed for the neighborhood around this temple that the people would not be drawn into this mystery religion but instead will be told the Good News of Jesus Christ.
